How to Use a Dog Harness: A Step-by-Step Guide for Happy, Safe Walks

Teaching your dog how to use a dog harness can make dog walks much safer, comfortable and enjoyable for both the dog and the dog walker.

Whether switching from a dog collar or are endeavouring to stop your dog from pulling, a harness can be a game changer.

In this article we cover why dog harnesses are useful, the different types available and how to put one on properly.

Why Learning How to Use a Dog Harness is Important

Having the knowledge of how to use a dog harness properly keeps your dog both safe and comfortable.  The difference between a harness and a collar is that a harness distributes the pressure evenly across your dog’s chest and shoulders, instead of just on their neck.  What this means is:

  • Less strain on the neck and throat – good for dogs that have breathing issues or are prone to pulling
  • Improved control – better for walks and training
  • Reduced slipping out  - better than collars
  • Increased comfort  - is comfortable for dogs of all shapes and size

If you have been struggling with your dog lunging, pulling, or slipping out of the collar then learning how to use a dog harness will make your walks a more pleasurable experience.

Types of Dog Harnesses

The main styles of dog harnesses are:

  • Back-clip harness: The leash attaches at the back — great for calm walkers.
  • Front-clip harness: The leash attaches at the chest — ideal for training and reducing pulling.
  • Dual-clip harness: Offers both front and back clips for flexibility.
  • Step-in harness: Easy to put on — great for dogs who dislike overhead harnesses.
  • No-pull harness: Specifically designed to discourage pulling behavior.

How to Use a Dog Harness (Step-by-Step)

Here is how to use a dog harness in the correct way:

1.    Gently introduce the harness.

Allow your dog  to sniff it first and then reward them with treats for calm behaviour.

2.    Identify the harness parts.

Usually the chest strap going across and the D-ring (for the leash) sits on the back or chest.

3.    Put on correctly.

o    Overhead harnesses - slip it over your dog’s head.
o    Step-in harnesses: lay it flat and guide your dog’s paws through the openings.

4.    Secure the buckles.

Fasten the straps, making sure nothing is twisted and the fit is comfortable.

5.    Adjust for a snug fit.

You should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body.

6.    Attach the leash and test it.

Walk around indoors first to ensure your dog feels secure and happy.
